Search "tow truck Townsville" at the wrong moment and it usually means something has just gone seriously sideways — a bingle on the Ring Road, a 4WD locked up on a Cungulla beach run, a flat battery in a Stockland carpark, or an EV that absolutely cannot be towed the way the bloke behind you is suggesting.
This guide is the local operator's view of when you actually need a Townsville tow truck, the type of truck that suits each job, and what to say when you call. We're Kwiktow NQ — a Townsville-owned 24/7 towing and recovery business — and these are the call-outs we run, week in, week out.

1. After a crash on a Townsville road
If you've been in a collision — Ring Road, Townsville CBD, Bruce Highway through Bohle, or a side street in Aitkenvale — the first call is 000 if anyone is hurt. Once the scene is safe and police are dealt with, you'll need a Townsville tow truck to clear your vehicle.
Accident towing is regulated in Queensland — only authorised operators can attend a crash scene, and you have the right to nominate where your car goes (your panel shop, your home, our compound, anywhere). The truck of choice is a tilt tray so the damaged vehicle isn't dragged.
- Direct billing to RACQ, AAMI, Suncorp, NRMA, Allianz, QBE, Youi and Budget Direct.
- Scene clean-up — broken glass, plastic and fluid containment.
- CCTV-monitored on-site storage if you're not sure where to send the car yet.

2. When your car won't start in Aitkenvale, Kirwan or in town
This is the bread-and-butter job. You're parked outside Stockland, Coles in Hyde Park, or you've made it three blocks from work and the engine has given up. The car isn't damaged — it just won't move.
For a non-running passenger vehicle, a tilt tray is the safer option. The tray lowers, the car is winched on with all four wheels off the ground, and it's delivered to your mechanic, dealership or driveway.
"We get a lot of calls from carparks. People are embarrassed because the car isn't 'broken' enough — it just won't crank. That's exactly the right call."
Common Townsville breakdown spots we attend most weeks: Stockland Townsville, Willows Shopping Centre, Castletown, Domain Central, Riverway carparks, James Cook Uni, Lavarack Barracks gates, the ferry terminal at Breakwater, and the Bruce Highway shoulder either side of Bohle.
3. When you specifically need a tilt tray (not a standard tow)
"Tilt tray" gets thrown around but it's a real distinction. A traditional tow involves wheels-on-the-ground; a tilt tray is a flatbed where the deck pivots down, the vehicle is winched on, and the deck levels back up. It's the right tool when:
- The vehicle is an AWD or 4WD (towing one axle can damage the centre diff).
- The vehicle is EV or hybrid (more on that next).
- The vehicle is low or modified (lowered suspension, big bodykit, splitter — anything that won't clear a standard hookup).
- The vehicle is damaged from an accident.
- The vehicle is a prestige or high-value car you simply don't want dragged.
Most of our Townsville fleet is tilt tray for exactly this reason — it covers nearly every passenger-vehicle job safely.
4. EVs and hybrids — why tilt tray is non-negotiable
Townsville's seeing more Teslas, BYDs, MGs, Polestars and Toyota hybrids on the road every month. If yours fails, do not let anyone tow it on its wheels. EVs use the wheels themselves to generate power back into the battery; pulling a non-running EV with two wheels on the ground can damage the motor, battery management system, or both — and that bill is six figures, not four.
Every Kwiktow NQ tilt tray is EV-safe. We winch the vehicle on with neutral handling procedures and secure it without chassis straps that could foul HV components.
5. Bogged at Cungulla, Saunders or a Hervey Range track
Townsville is 4WD country and the local conditions punish people who underestimate them. We do regular recovery jobs:
- Cungulla & Bowling Green Bay — soft sand at high tide, often catches first-time beach drivers.
- Saunders Beach & Bushland Beach — same story plus tidal mud.
- Hervey Range fire trails — slick descents and washouts after rain.
- Mount Stuart & the Town Common — bush tracks that get sticky in the wet.
- Magnetic Island — beach & bush recovery via the ferry when needed.
Our recovery vehicles carry winches, snatch gear, traction boards and bridle straps. We assess before pulling — yanking a stuck 200-Series the wrong way can cost you a chassis rail.
6. Prestige, modified and low-clearance vehicles
If your car is worth more than a house deposit, or you've spent a year and your savings on a build — the cheapest tow in town is not the one you want. Prestige, classic, exotic and heavily modified vehicles need:
- Ramp extensions for low front lips and splitters.
- Wheel-only restraint (no straps over chassis or control arms).
- Soft straps that won't mark wheels or paint.
- Optional covered transport for show cars and customer hand-overs.

7. Boat & trailer transport around Townsville
Not every tow-truck job is a broken car. We move a lot of boats — between Ross River boat ramp and Magnetic Marina, into dry-stack storage, from a private driveway to a service yard before the wet season, or trailers on their own when registration's lapsed.
We also coordinate with the Magnetic Island ferry for cross-water vehicle moves.
8. Bobcat, mini ex or small plant moves
Townsville has a lot of small civil and landscaping operators who'd rather pay a tow truck once than buy a beavertail. Our tilt trays handle bobcats, skid steers, mini excavators, scissor lifts, forklifts and shipping containers. Load restraint is to QLD Chain of Responsibility standards — when you're moving plant on a public road, that matters.
9. Trucks, buses, caravans and big rigs
If you're a Townsville fleet operator running rigid trucks, or a grey nomad whose caravan has chosen Townsville to die in, our heavy wreckers handle the job. Under-lift recovery, air-cushion gear and load-shifting for cargo that can't ride along.
10. Roadside-only jobs (no tow needed)
Sometimes a tow truck is overkill. We also do the small stuff that gets you back on the road in 10 minutes:
- Jump start for a flat battery (Townsville's heat is murder on batteries — average lifespan up here is shorter than down south).
- Battery replacement on the spot.
- Flat tyre change if your spare is good.
- Out-of-fuel petrol or diesel delivery.
- Lockouts — we can often get you in without damage.
11. What to tell the dispatcher when you call
To get a Townsville tow truck dispatched as fast as possible, have these five things ready:
- Where you are. A street address is best, but a Maps drop-pin or even "the McDonald's at Aitkenvale, in the carpark facing Ross River Rd" works fine.
- Vehicle make, model, year and rough size. "2018 Hilux dual cab" is enough.
- What's happened. Won't start? Flat tyre? Crashed? Bogged? Locked out?
- Where it's going. Home address, mechanic, dealership, panel shop or "your compound, I'll figure it out tomorrow".
- Any access issues. Multi-storey carpark with a height limit? Steep driveway? Locked yard?
That's it. We'll quote on the call, give you an ETA and let you know which truck is heading your way.
12. How to choose a tow truck operator in Townsville
You're searching "tow truck near me" on a phone with 14% battery. Here's the cheat sheet:
- Is the dispatcher local? Some "Townsville" operators route to a Brisbane call centre that takes 30 seconds longer to find a Townsville suburb on a map. Ask.
- Are they 24/7 with their own trucks? Plenty of brokers will quote you a price and then sub the job to whoever's free. We run our own fleet.
- Tilt tray or hook? For nearly every modern car you want tilt tray. If they only offer a hook tow on a 2024 hybrid, hang up.
- Insurance authorised? If it's an accident, ask — non-authorised operators can't legally attend most scenes.
- Quote up front. No quote, no booking. We'll give you a real number on the call.
